How to Wash Lace Lingerie and Keep It Looking Lovely

Dark Passion Lingerie Set from HTN

Lace, embroidery, mesh and strappy details are part of what makes lingerie feel special. Giving those pieces a little care can help them stay looking their best. There is no single washing method that suits every set, so always start with the care label on your garment.

Read the label before you wash

Check the fabric composition, washing symbols and any instructions supplied with the piece. A method suitable for one lace set may not be suitable for another, particularly if it includes trims, moulded cups or a coated finish. If a label is missing or unclear, ask the retailer before washing.

Do not apply lace-care advice automatically to a wet-look bodysuit or another coated garment. Those materials can have different requirements.

When hand washing is permitted

Use the water temperature and detergent type recommended by the label. A small amount of suitable detergent is usually easier to rinse away than a heavily soapy bath. Wash colours separately when required, and avoid rubbing delicate embroidery against itself.

Move the garment gently through the water rather than twisting, scrubbing or pulling the straps. Rinse according to the instructions until detergent has been removed. Avoid leaving a piece soaking for longer than its care guidance allows.

If the label allows machine washing

Choose the permitted temperature and a suitable gentle cycle. A mesh laundry bag can help keep hooks and straps from catching on other garments. Fasten hooks before placing the item in the bag, and keep it away from rough items or exposed zips.

A laundry bag does not make a hand-wash-only garment safe for the machine. The label remains the deciding factor. Avoid adding bleach or fabric softener unless the care instructions explicitly permit them.

Dry without stretching the shape

Follow the drying instructions on the label. Where appropriate, gently press out water without wringing the garment. You can use a clean towel to absorb moisture, taking care not to crush shaped cups.

Let the piece dry in the recommended position, with straps and panels supported. Avoid a tumble dryer, radiator or other direct heat unless the label permits that drying method. Check that the garment is fully dry before putting it away.

Store sets so the details do not snag

Keep matching pieces together, close hooks and give lace room rather than forcing it into an overfilled drawer. Lay straps neatly so they do not tangle around jewellery or other fastenings. For shaped bras, avoid folding one cup inside the other if that distorts the shape.

Hosiery benefits from gentle handling too. Store your stockings away from clips and rough edges that could catch the fabric.

Make care part of choosing your next set

Before buying, consider whether you are comfortable with the care the piece needs. An intricate lingerie set may deserve a different routine from your everyday basics. The right choice is one you enjoy wearing and can look after without fuss.
